Pigeon problems are rampant in Mumbai. An honest guide to bird net types, materials, installation methods, and how to choose the right specification for your property.
If you live in a Mumbai apartment, you know the problem well: pigeons nesting on your AC unit, droppings on your balcony furniture, feathers in your drain pipes. Bird netting is the most effective, humane, and durable solution. Here is everything you need to know.
Why Bird Nets Are the Right Solution
Before exploring alternatives, it is worth confirming that bird netting is the most recommended approach:
- Spikes are effective but unsightly, and do not work for large areas.
- Ultrasonic devices have limited effectiveness with habituated urban pigeons.
- Chemical repellents raise legitimate animal welfare concerns and are not sustainable.
- Bird nets are invisible from a distance, 100% humane, and prevent nesting permanently when properly installed.
Understanding HDPE Bird Net Specifications
The quality and suitability of a bird net depends heavily on its specification:
Mesh size:
- 50mm x 50mm: Standard for pigeons and similar large birds.
- 25mm x 25mm: For smaller birds or where sparrows and mynas are also a concern.
Thread diameter:
- 1.8mm–2.4mm: Sufficient for typical residential applications.
- 2.4mm+: Recommended for terraces and areas exposed to strong winds.
UV Stabilization:
The net must be UV-stabilized HDPE. Non-stabilized nets will degrade within 12–18 months in Mumbai's intense sun. Our nets are UV-stabilized for a minimum of 5–7 years of outdoor exposure.
Colour:
Black, green, or transparent. Black nets become virtually invisible against most building facades and are our most popular choice.
Installation Method Matters as Much as the Net
A good net installed incorrectly will sag, tear, or allow gaps within a year. Key installation requirements:
- Steel cable perimeter: A stainless steel or galvanized wire is run around the entire perimeter of the installation area. The net is then clipped or tied to this cable.
- Eye bolts and anchor points: Must be drilled and fixed into solid masonry, not just plaster.
- Tension: The net must be pulled taut without sags. Sags create landing points for birds.
- No gaps at edges: Pigeons are intelligent — they will find and exploit any gap larger than 5cm.
Typical Applications in Mumbai Homes
- Balcony enclosures (most common)
- AC outdoor unit protection (prevents nesting in the unit)
- Terrace areas
- Stairwell openings in older buildings
- Warehouse and commercial building rooftops
